Problems With Mobility? Getting A Lift Chair For Your Home May Make Your Life Easier

Posted on: 22 June 2015

As you age, you may begin having trouble getting up from your chair, couch, or bed, and this can be frustrating, especially if you live alone. You may get worried when you sit down, thinking that you may not be able to get back up, and you may even try to prop things up around you to help you. If this sounds familiar, you may want to consider getting a lift chair. This could be the solution to your problems, and you might even be able to get one without paying full price.

What Is a Lift Chair?

A lift chair looks like a normal reclining chair, but it offers functions that normal recliners do not offer. Lift chairs are powered chairs with controls. They are designed to lift up from the back, causing the chair to be at a forward angle. With the back of the chair raised, you will have more leverage to get up when you need to.

The nice part is that once you get out of the chair, you can easily return to it because of the upwards position. You will no longer have to fall back to sit down; you will simply turn around and sit, and the seat of the chair will be easy to get to.

Once you are sitting, you can use the controls on the chair to position it in different ways. You can lower the back of the seat, which will allow you to sit at a normal position, or you could lean it backwards even more, which will allow you to lie down in the chair.

What Features Do They Offer?

There are many additional features you can look for when purchasing a lift chair, and these include:

  • Extra wide seat – If you are not as small as you once were and do not fit well in normal size chairs, you could purchase one that has an extra wide seat. This would make sitting more comfortable and easier for you. Extra wide seats are also nice to look for if you normally have a pet that sits with you on your seat. The extra space will give your pet the room it needs to sit next to you.
  • Heat – Some chairs have the ability to heat up, and this is a nice feature if you suffer from pain. You could set the control for the heat to come on, and this could be very relaxing for you.
  • Massage – You could also look for a chair that offers built-in massage mechanisms. With this feature, you could get a massage whenever you want. All you have to do is turn on the button for the massage, and you might even get to choose from various types, speeds, and levels.

If you feel like this would be helpful for you, talk to your doctor about it to find out if this would be feasible for you.

What Options Are Available For Financing A Lift Chair?

If your doctor feels that this is a necessity for you at your home, he or she could prescribe a lift chair to you. When this occurs, you might be able to get the chair for little or no money. The first thing you may want to do is call your insurance company to find out what they will cover. When you do this, you may find that your insurance company will pay for you to rent a chair, or you might find out that your insurance company will pay for you to purchase a chair.

If you have Medicare Part B, you may have to pay a small amount for the chair, but Medicare would cover most of the costs if it is medically needed.

Having a lift chair at your house could help you keep your independence longer and make it easier for you to live alone. If you would like to learn more about lift chairs, talk to your doctor and a company that offers medical equipment for home use.
